Austin Zoo is not your typical zoo. And that’s exactly why I love it.
It’s a rescue sanctuary. Every animal here has a backstory. Many were surrendered or rescued from neglectful situations.
We were lucky enough to have a personal tour with Toni from the team. We learned about former circus animals, exotic pets abandoned by owners, and even baby cougars left at their gate.
There are roughly 300 animals, far fewer than bigger facilities like the Houston Zoo, but that’s intentional. The habitats are spacious. The focus is on welfare.
As a non-profit, the zoo relies on donations and ticket sales. They receive dozens of requests every month to take in surrendered exotic pets. It’s eye-opening.
For my kids, this was more than an Austin kids’ activity. It was a lesson in compassion.

My highlight was feeding Buddy the giraffe crunchy apple pieces. Pure joy.
The six-mile scenic drive includes feed bags with entry. Ask for the kids’ adventure guidebook at the gate. My two loved ticking off species as we spotted them.
Afterwards, we stopped at the petting barnyard to cuddle baby goats. As my daughter says, “Totally adorbs!”

Everything is interactive. Everything is intentional. Even the outdoor play space benefits from afternoon shade. Smart design for Texas heat.
Getting the kids to leave was the only problem. Allow at least three to four hours.
