After exploring multiple regions across the Sunshine State, I’ve discovered incredible beaches, unforgettable wildlife encounters, amazing foodie destinations and some seriously underrated family adventures that deserve a spot on every Florida itinerary.

When people think about things to do in Florida with kids, Orlando usually comes to mind first.
And honestly… it’s deserved.
Orlando is still one of the best family vacation spots, as it holds the majority of the theme parks in Florida.
Disney World is magical no matter how old you are. I’ve visited more than once, and every trip feels different. There is always another ride to experience, another snack to try, and another memory waiting to be made.

But Disney isn’t the only reason families visit Orlando.
One of my personal favourites is Universal Studios Florida. With the opening of Epic Universe, Orlando’s theme park scene has become even more exciting, making it an even stronger choice for family travel in Florida. Whether you’re a Wizarding World of Harry Potter fan or chasing adrenaline on rollercoasters, it’s easy to spend several days here.
For younger children, Crayola Experience Orlando is always a winner. Watching kids design, colour and create their own masterpieces is such a fun change of pace after a few busy theme park days.
If you’re staying around International Drive, don’t miss ICON Park. Home to The Orlando Eye, Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium, it’s an easy place to spend an afternoon without the huge crowds of the major parks.
One place I still think deserves far more attention is Artegon Marketplace.
Imagine if an artist, a creator and a vintage collector all designed a shopping centre together.
That’s the vibe.
Florida’s largest artisan marketplace is packed with independent creators selling artwork, jewellery, clothing, handmade gifts and quirky collectibles. Every corner feels different, and I could happily spend hours wandering through, discovering something new.
Kids are entertained.
Adults are entertained.
Foodies are entertained.
That’s what makes Orlando one of the best places to visit in Florida, whether you’re travelling as a family, a couple or even with friends.

One hotel I continue recommending is B Resort & Spa Disney Springs Resort Area.
It smells incredible from the moment you walk inside and feels modern without leaning too heavily into the Disney theme. Best of all, you’re close to the parks without paying the premium of staying inside a Disney-owned resort.
If you’re planning to spend more time at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort remains one of my favourite family-friendly options. The retro styling is fun, the pools are fantastic, and its location makes early park starts so much easier.
Where to Eat in Orlando
After a busy park day, Nomad Lounge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom remains one of my favourite places to unwind. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is elevated and it’s one of those places that often flies under the radar.
For something more casual, NBC Sports Grill & Brew at Universal CityWalk delivers exactly what you’d expect. Huge meals, plenty of screens, and an energetic atmosphere that’s perfect after riding rollercoasters all day.
If you’re staying near Disney Springs, don’t overlook American Kitchen Bar & Grill at B Resort.
I still remember ordering a mojito made with herbs growing right there inside the restaurant. There’s something pretty special about watching your garnish being picked moments before it lands in your drink. It’s those little details you remember long after the holiday is over.
Orlando may be Florida’s biggest drawcard, but don’t make the mistake of stopping there.

Winter Haven
One of the Most Underrated Places to Visit in Florida With Kids
If you’re planning a family vacation in Florida, don’t make the mistake of driving straight past Winter Haven.
Sitting just under an hour from Orlando, it’s close enough to include on the same road trip, but different enough to feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem. For families looking for things to do in Florida with kids beyond the big-name theme parks, Winter Haven deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Things to Do in Winter Haven With Kids
Most people know Winter Haven because it’s home to LEGOLAND Florida Resort, and if you’ve read my previous articles you’ll already know how much we enjoyed it. It’s one of my favourite family attractions in Florida for younger kids, with smaller queues, interactive rides and plenty of hands-on fun.
But there is so much more to Winter Haven than LEGO bricks.
One experience I’ll never forget was visiting Safari Wilderness Ranch.
Opened in 2012, this unique wildlife park has been recognised as one of America’s best safari experiences, and after visiting, I completely understood why. Instead of wandering around another traditional zoo, we climbed aboard an open-air safari vehicle and explored more than 260 acres of beautiful countryside, coming face-to-face with zebras, water buffalo, antelope and other incredible animals roaming freely.
It felt like stepping into another country without ever leaving Florida.
My Favourite Winter Haven Memory
Without question, my favourite part of the entire experience was feeding the ring-tailed lemurs.
When I was little, someone gave me a soft toy lemur and I absolutely adored it. We were inseparable. So years later, standing there with real lemurs gently grabbing my hands as they carefully pulled grapes from between my fingers felt strangely emotional.
Their tiny little hands were so gentle, so curious and so human-like.
It’s one of those travel moments that’s stayed with me long after the holiday ended.

More Things to Do in Winter Haven
If someone in your family loves sport, stop by the Visit Central Florida Visitor Information Centre.
Not only is it a great place to pick up local recommendations, but it’s also home to the Florida Sports Hall of Fame exhibits, celebrating athletes, coaches and sporting legends from across the state.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I’m not exactly the world’s most athletic person…
But I have represented Australia.

For families, though, my pick is still LEGOLAND Florida Resort.
There’s something pretty magical about waking up inside a LEGO-themed hotel. The kids absolutely loved every minute of it, from the themed rooms to the nightly entertainment, and being able to walk straight into the park the next morning made life so much easier.
Where to Eat in Winter Haven
One dinner I still remember is Harborside Restaurant.
Set right on the edge of Lake Shipp, it’s one of those places where the sunset almost competes with the food.
Almost.
Relaxing beside the water after a full day exploring Winter Haven felt like the perfect way to slow the pace before heading off on the next part of our Florida road trip.
Tallahassee
One of the Best Places to Visit in North Florida With Kids
When most people picture Florida with kids, they imagine rollercoasters, beaches and palm trees.
Tallahassee surprised me.
As Florida’s capital city, I expected government buildings and a university town.
Instead, I found fantastic food, beautiful nature, fascinating history and plenty of family-friendly adventures.
It’s one of those destinations that flies completely under the radar, making it one of my favourite hidden gems in Florida.
Whether your family loves outdoor adventures or learning something new together, there are plenty of things to do in Tallahassee with kids.
Think ziplining through the trees.
Kayaking peaceful waterways.
Exploring museums.
Walking through historic villages.
Or simply slowing down and enjoying a side of Florida many visitors never get to experience.
If your road trip takes you through North Florida, don’t skip it.
Things to Do in Tallahassee With Kids
When most people think about Florida with kids, Tallahassee probably isn’t the first destination that comes to mind.
That was me too.
As Florida’s capital city, I expected politics, government buildings, and a busy university town. Instead, I discovered fantastic food, beautiful parks, outdoor adventures, and enough family-friendly activities to easily fill a long weekend.
It’s one of the most underrated stops for family travel in Florida, especially if you’re road tripping through the state’s Panhandle.
If your family loves mixing adventure with history, Tallahassee delivers.
You can spend the morning ziplining through the treetops, paddle a kayak along peaceful waterways, wander through museums, or step back in time at one of the city’s historic sites. It offers a slower pace than Orlando, but that’s exactly what makes it such a refreshing addition to a Florida road trip.
If you’re travelling with kids who need to burn off some energy, Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park is a beautiful place for a picnic or a walk, while the Tallahassee Museum combines wildlife, boardwalks, history and aerial adventure courses all in one location.
I also loved that Tallahassee felt authentic.
It wasn’t trying to be another theme park destination. It simply embraced everything that makes North Florida unique.
If you’re looking for things to do in Florida with kids that are a little different, Tallahassee is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Where to Stay in Tallahassee
We based ourselves at Four Points by Sheraton Tallahassee Downtown, and it was the perfect base for exploring the city.
The rooms were spacious, the beds were incredibly comfortable after long days of sightseeing, and the location made it easy to reach restaurants, parks, and attractions without spending ages in the car.
If you’re looking for something a little more boutique, Hotel Duval is another fantastic option with a rooftop bar that’s perfect once the kids are tucked in for the evening.
Where to Eat in Tallahassee
I wasn’t expecting Tallahassee to impress me quite so much when it came to food.
I was wrong.
There are loads of fantastic restaurants scattered throughout the city, and if you’re a foodie like me you’ll have plenty to choose from.
One place you absolutely shouldn’t miss is The Edison.
Set inside a beautifully restored power station overlooking Cascades Park, it combines incredible food with one of the best atmospheres in the city. It’s one of those restaurants that manages to feel special without being pretentious.
If you’ve got room afterwards, treat yourself to one of Tallahassee’s local dessert spots before calling it a night.
Florida’s Gulf Coast
White Sand Beaches, Coastal Towns and Relaxed Family Holidays
When I picture the perfect Florida family vacation, this is what comes to mind.
Sugar-white beaches.
Turquoise water.
Little beach towns where nobody seems to be in a hurry.
The Florida Gulf Coast completely stole my heart.
The Best Family Beaches in Florida
In the far northwest of the state, we explored Cape San Blas and South Walton, and I still think they’re two of the best places to visit in Florida if your ideal holiday includes beach days, sunsets, and slowing down.
South Walton is made up of several beautiful beach communities, each with its own personality. You’ll find gorgeous beaches, boutique shopping, bike paths, coastal dune lakes and some of the prettiest streets in Florida.
If you’ve ever seen photos of white picket fences, pastel beach houses and perfect coastal towns, chances are you’ve already seen South Walton without even realising it.
Meanwhile, Cape San Blas feels like one of Florida’s best-kept secrets.
It’s quieter.
Less developed.
And exactly the sort of place where families can completely switch off.
Whether your kids want to build elaborate sandcastles, splash in the calm water, hunt for shells or learn to stand-up paddleboard, this stretch of coastline is one of the best Florida beaches for families.

If you’re staying in South Walton, Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa remains a fantastic, family-friendly option with direct beach access, multiple pools, and plenty of activities.
If Cape San Blas is more your style, I’d recommend renting a beach house.
There’s something pretty special about waking up to the sound of waves, enjoying breakfast on the deck and spending the day barefoot.
Where to Eat on Florida’s Gulf Coast
One of my favourite memories was wandering through Seaside.
The white picket fences.
The colourful cottages.
The relaxed coastal atmosphere.
It honestly felt like walking onto a movie set.
Dinner from the famous Airstream food trucks is practically a rite of passage here.
And if you only eat one thing…
Make it the grilled cheese from The Melt Down on 30A.
Yes, it’s “just” a grilled cheese.
No, it absolutely isn’t.

If there is one place in Florida that genuinely feels like a bucket-list destination, it’s the Space Coast.
This stretch of east coast Florida combines everything I love about family travel in Florida. Beaches, wildlife, adventure and experiences you simply cannot get anywhere else in the world.

The Space Coast is home to Cocoa Beach, Kennedy Space Center and some of the most unique family experiences in the United States. It is hands down one of the best places to visit in Florida with kids, especially if you want something beyond theme parks.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is still one of the most unforgettable places I have ever taken my kids.
It’s not just educational, it’s genuinely exciting.
We walked through rocket exhibits, stood under real spacecraft and learned about astronauts who have actually lived in space. There is something surreal about explaining to your kids that these rockets left Earth.
And if you’re lucky enough, you might even witness a live rocket launch.
We did.
And honestly, nothing prepares you for it.
The sound, the light, the moment it leaves Earth… it’s one of those experiences that stays with you forever.
You can also book astronaut encounters, IMAX space films and behind-the-scenes tours that make it feel even more immersive.

Cocoa Beach. One of the Best Florida Beaches for Families
Cocoa Beach is relaxed, fun and incredibly easy for families.
Soft sand, gentle waves and plenty of space to just unwind after busy travel days.
It’s also the perfect base if you’re exploring the Space Coast region.
We spent mornings on the beach, afternoons exploring and evenings watching the sky change colours over the ocean. Simple, but perfect.
Nearby you’ll also find Cocoa Beach Pier, which is ideal for sunset walks, casual dining and a bit of holiday atmosphere without the crowds of Miami or Orlando.
Wildlife, Water and Hidden Adventures
One of my favourite surprises on the Space Coast was how much wildlife you can actually see.
From manatees to dolphins, this area feels alive in a completely different way.

Exploring the Thousand Islands by kayak or pontoon boat
Visiting Brevard Zoo, where you can kayak past animal habitats
Watching manatees drift through the waterways like something out of a documentary

To wind down in the evening drive over to the Lighthouse Cove for a round of mini golf and ice cream or cocktails on the Cocoa Beach Pier. Or perhaps get a little dose of retail therapy at Ron Jon Surf Shop. I’ll warn you, you might be in there for a while.

For convenience, Hampton Inn Cocoa Beach is still one of the easiest places to stay. You can walk to shops, the beach and restaurants without needing to drive everywhere.
If you’re after something more resort-style, there are plenty of beachfront hotels along Cocoa Beach and nearby areas that make it easy to wake up right next to the ocean.
Where to Eat on the Space Coast
One of my favourite things about the Space Coast is how relaxed the dining scene is.
No pressure.
No fuss.
Just good food and ocean views.
Pelican Bar & Grill at Cocoa Beach Pier is still one of my top picks for sunset dining. Sitting above the ocean with a drink in hand while the sun goes down is exactly what a Florida holiday should feel like.
