When Louisville invited us to explore their city, I was keen as mustard. Kentucky is the birthplace of KFC, so of course, I was curious and ready for adventure. It didn’t take long to realise Louisville is so much more than fried chicken and a white-bearded Colonel. It’s a vibrant and genuinely family-friendly city filled with fun attractions for all ages.

Louisville has a warm heritage and an easygoing culture that makes a visitor feel like part of the family. Young kids might not care about words like history or culture, but Louisville knows how to captivate adults and children. The city sneaks up on you. If you arrive sceptical, you’ll leave completely smitten.

Where to Stay in Louisville With Kids
Louisville has a great range of family-friendly hotels near the main attractions. Staying downtown gives you quick access to the Muhammad Ali Center, the Slugger Museum, and the riverfront. Many hotels now offer family suites, free breakfast, and indoor pools, which come in handy on hot summer days. Prices in 2025 sit between USD 150 and USD 300 per night, depending on season and location. If you prefer a quieter base, the East Market and NuLu areas have boutique hotels with great food options and easy parking. It’s worth booking early in peak seasons, especially during Kentucky Derby week.
10 Fun Things To Do In Louisville With Kids
This isn’t no sit at home with board games town! Here are our 10 favourite things to do in Louisville with kids, perfect for Louisville family fun for families who love hands-on attractions and real storytelling moments.
1. Kentucky Derby Museum With Kids
First on the Louisville bucket list. Now hear me out. When I first heard we were going to the Kentucky Derby Museum, I yawned. A horse racing museum sounded like the last place I’d ever want to be. I’ve never cared about horses. But the Kentucky Derby Museum surprised me from the moment we walked in. It’s full of hands-on activities that kept Mia and Caius glued for hours.

Their favourite part was the interactive horse race game with mechanical horses and a TV screen. The 360-degree Derby history film was incredible, and the kids were obsessed with the hands-on activities – fake betting station, the Derby trivia, and creating their own virtual jockey outfits. They even dressed up as jockeys.
We underestimated this place. You need at least three hours here. More if the kids fall in love with the racing games.
On a side note, and if you happen to be in Louisville with kids at the right time, you might want to skip a standard Churchill Downs tour and head straight to the Kentucky Derby experience instead. The Kentucky Derby isn’t just a horse race – it’s a world-famous Louisville event full of colorful hats, festive traditions, and thrilling thoroughbred racing.
Kids will enjoy the excitement of the crowd, seeing the horses up close, and soaking in the energy of this iconic Louisville family-friendly activity. It’s a fun and unforgettable way to experience the best of Louisville and the Kentucky Derby without the usual racetrack tour.
2. Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville
Just like the Derby Museum, I arrived at the Muhammad Ali Museum with zero interest in boxing. Louisville got me again.

The kids loved the interactive exhibits – shadow boxing, creating art, and starring in little video clips. I found the multimedia exhibition on Muhammad Ali’s life surprisingly emotional and deeply inspiring. There’s nothing else like this museum anywhere. We stayed so long that the staff gently asked us to wrap up because they were closing for the day.

3. Louisville Mega Cavern Adventure Park
Last year, we bounced our way through a 168-foot-deep cave in Wales. This year, we wanted to see if the Louisville underground playground could top it. Mega Cavern didn’t disappoint.
This enormous underground attraction lets you try a high ropes course beneath the surface of the Earth. Or if you prefer a thrill, sign up for the underground zip line course, which is as wild as it sounds. For little ones, the calmer Mega Tram tour is a great option.

Mega Cavern has a bit of everything, from tame to properly terrifying. It’s one of the best indoor things to do in Louisville with kids, especially on hot or rainy days.
4. Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
You can’t walk past this place in Downtown Louisville without noticing the world’s largest baseball bat leaning against the entrance. Inside the Louisville Slugger Museum, you’ll find fun hands-on exhibits showing how 1.8 million baseball bats are crafted each year. The guided slugger factory tours are a highlight, giving you a start-to-finish look at how each bat is shaped and finished, and some baseball history.

After the tour, Mia and Caius spent ages at the free t-ball batting practice. And the best bit is everyone gets a mini Slugger bat to take home. Perfect for baseball fans and those of us who don’t even know how to swing a bat. Don’t miss this baseball experience.
5. Louisville Zoo With Kids
We visited the Louisville Zoo on a warm day, so the splash pad became our first stop. The kids spent half their visit giggling and chasing water jets with new friends. The zoo sits above the Mega Cavern, so it’s funny walking around knowing an entire underground world sits below your feet.

The polar bear exhibit ended up being the highlight. We watched him being fed and then playing in the water, tossing a tyre and diving in after it. We could’ve stayed there for hours. A true family experience.
6. Spirit of Jefferson Boat Cruise
Louisville has two historical boats that cruise the river. The Belle of Louisville, now over 110 years old, and the Spirit of Jefferson, which has more than 50 years under its belt.

We booked a lunch cruise on the Spirit of Jefferson from 12 pm to 2 pm. The DJ was a character and somehow convinced Mia to stand up and sing Let It Go in front of the entire boat. I was half shocked, half proud.

Lunch was solid for a buffet, with southern fried chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes, slaw, and more pies than we could count. The city views from the water made the trip even better.
Please note the historic riverboat called Spirit of Jefferson was retired and sold in 2017, and is no longer part of the regular river tours on the Ohio River. The main river cruise experiences in Louisville today are offered by the Belle of Louisville and the Mary M. Miller riverboats. Those vessels run sightseeing, lunch, dinner, and seasonal themed cruises on the Ohio River. Check the Belle of Louisville tickets here.
7. Louisville Visitor Center
Visit the Louisville Visitor Center for souvenirs, discount coupons, and free walking tours. The kids loved seeing the statue of the Colonel holding a giant bucket of fake fried chicken. Of course, we took photos. Warn your kids not to try a bite. It doesn’t taste like chicken.

8. Kentucky Science Center
This is one of the best indoor things to do in Louisville with kids. The Kentucky Science Center is packed with hands-on experiments, climbing structures, and three floors of interactive exhibits. The IMAX-style theatre is a bonus. Mia and Caius loved the freedom to touch everything. It is an easy half-day activity.
9. Waterfront Park and Big Four Bridge
Waterfront Park is perfect for kids who need space to run. You’ll find playgrounds, green lawns, splash areas, picnic tables, and easy walking paths along the Ohio River. The Big Four Bridge gives you great city views and a fun pedestrian walk across the river. In summer, the park often hosts free family events and food trucks.
10. Frazier History Museum
The Frazier History Museum blends storytelling with hands-on exhibits in a way kids actually understand. Costumed actors bring major historical moments to life. The Lewis and Clark section is great, and the Kentucky-themed galleries connect everything together. If your kids enjoy stories more than textbooks, this is a strong pick.
