Xocomil Water Park Guatemala – Why Central America’s Largest Water Park Is the Best $13 Day Out

Would you travel 6 hours for a $13 day out at Xocomil Guatemala, Central America’s largest water park? This hidden gem is tucked away from the usual tourist trail, far from the backpacker buses and Instagram crowds. It’s a colorful, action-packed waterpark that’s a local favourite, offering endless fun for families without breaking the bank, and you’ll barely see any other foreigners while you’re there.

I had heard whispers about Xocomil Water Park for years. Friends who lived in Guatemala kept insisting it was the real deal. Eventually, I took their advice and found myself deep in the heart of Retalhuleu with Mia and Caius, ready to experience a side of Guatemala that most visitors completely miss.

Heading Toward Panajachel

Xocomil is a long way from everywhere. First, I had an almost 3-hour journey to Panajachel, where we stayed for three nights. On our second day, I met the Dennings from Discover Share Inspire. They are a travelling family who ended up in Panajachel during their own adventures and never left. They had just celebrated their first anniversary of living in Guatemala.

During our day together, they casually mentioned that they were going to the water park Guatemala the next morning. I had no plans, so I figured, why not? I originally planned to ride with them in their veggie-powered mobile, a wild little ute that ran on vegetable oil. Later that afternoon, the fuel tank literally caught on fire during a road trip, and that idea burned out fast.

Their local friends came to the rescue, as locals always seem to do. Within an hour, we had arranged a private shuttle for US$115 for the day. The driver agreed to take us the three hours at sunrise, wait all day, and then take us back at 4 pm. Honestly, it felt like a bargain.

The Drive to Xocomil Water Park in Guatemala

We were collected at 6 am so we could reach Xocomil right when it opened at 9 am. We met up with the other families at a local gas station, added a few extra kids to our van, and off we went.

The road was twisted and dramatic. The views were beautiful, wide, and mountainous, although the sky was hazy from local burn offs. At one point a little girl in our van got terribly car sick, so we swapped cars and she fell asleep instantly.

The rest of the drive was smooth. A few toilet stops. Loads of chatting. Kids watching movies on the iPad. Before we knew it, we were rolling into Retalhuleu.

Xocomil Water Park only US$13

I could instantly tell we had not chosen the quietest day. About 20 school buses were already in the parking lot. Xocomil Water Park only opens Thursday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, which is wild considering the weather in Guatemala is basically water park perfect every day.

The ticket system is based on height for kids, so Mia and Caius were easy to measure. In 2025 adult tickets cost around US$13 each and kids under 1 meter are still free. For me and the kids the total came to about US$33. Wildly cheap for the size and quality of this place. Check out Xocomil Guatemala prices here.

My first impressions were strong. The park was spotless and huge. Everything was painted in bold Guatemalan colors, bright greens, deep yellows, red polka dots, burnt oranges. It gave me Waterbom Bali energy but with Guatemala personality and Guatemala prices. It was also far cheaper than places like Atlantis Bahamas or even my favourite Bali waterpark Waterbom.

We walked through the park with our group of five families, eventually setting up camp near the massive wave pool.

Family Fun at Xocomil Water Park – Central America’s Best Water Attraction

Beside the wave pool was a colorful kids area with slides popping out of giant frogs, raccoons, and crocodiles. Caius fell in love with a turtle shaped play pool where the shell filled with water and gently overflowed.

Other slides included the snake’s nest, a twisting cluster of around seven slides that popped out together. There was a toilet bowl, a boomerang slide similar to Waterbom Bali, speed slides, a brand new inflatable log coaster that had a line so long I missed out, a twin drop slide where the floor drops out from under you, and plenty more.

There were at least three different kids water zones throughout the park. Mia and Caius ran between mini slides, water jets, tipping buckets, and splash areas like they had been training for this day their whole lives.

Food was easy. Several small restaurants served typical theme park bites. Burgers, chips, and a drink for around US$3. Pizza, nachos, hot dogs, and pupusas. The prices were so low I kept double checking that they were real.

The park felt new and full of small thoughtful details. Even the stairs on the slides were numbered so you could see exactly how many steps you had climbed, which made the kids feel like tiny adventurers recording their stats.

The whole day disappeared in a blur of water, slides, laughter, and sunscreen.

Heading Back to Panajachel

When the water finally switched off at 4 pm, we said our goodbyes to the new friends we had made. Back in the van the kids fell asleep instantly, and I spent the three hour drive finishing a book.

Just before arriving back in Panajachel, the kids woke up starving. We went straight to dinner and I had one of the best meals of my whole Guatemala trip. After that we returned to the hotel, and I fell asleep before my laptop even finished loading the show I had tried to watch.

It was a perfect family day. Sun, adventure, chaos, color, laughter. Everything a water park day should be.

Where to Stay Near Xocomil Water Park Guatemala

If you want to stay close to Xocomil instead of driving back to Panajachel, the best option is to stay in Irtra Retalhuleu, they have their own hotel complex. IRTRA runs a few theme parks and family hotels in the area, and they are known for spotless rooms and great pools. The top picks for 2025 include Hostales del IRTRA and Hotel Larisa. These hotels are only minutes away from Xocomil and make the whole experience easier with kids.

If you prefer to base yourself in Panajachel like we did, you’ll find lakeside hotels at every price point. The bonus is the incredible views of Lake Atitlan every morning.

Other Things to Do With Kids in Guatemala

Guatemala is packed with family friendly adventures. Lake Atitlan is perfect for kids, with boat rides between villages, chocolate making workshops, and gentle hikes. Antigua is another favourite with colorful streets, chocolate museums, and easy day trips to coffee farms. Older kids will love the canopy zip lines in the forests around Atitlan, and animal lovers will enjoy the rescue centres near Guatemala City. Right next door to Xocomil is Irtra Xetulul theme park in Guatemala. Guatemala is small, but it delivers big experiences.
