Transylvania’s Bran Castle: Secrets Inside Dracula’s Legendary Fortress

Having always been a fan of Van Helsing, Twilight, and then watching Dracula Untold, I knew I had to see Dracula’s Castle Romania and witness the Dracula legend for myself.

Dracula Castle sold a few years back for around $80 million – of course, we didn’t actually buy it – but that didn’t stop me from dreaming. After all, if I ever stumble across that kind of money, I already know exactly where it would go!

Where is Dracula’s Castle in real life?

You’ll find “Dracula’s Castle,” also known as Bran Castle, perched high on a rocky hill in Transylvania, Romania. It looks straight out of a storybook, surrounded by misty mountains and forests. While it inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, it’s not actually where the vampire lived – but it’s every bit as magical (and spooky) as you’d hope.

Which is different from the Where is Vlad Dracula’s Castle? question.
The real Vlad the Impaler, who inspired the Dracula character, lived at Poenari Fortress, not Bran Castle. Poenari sits high in the Făgăraș Mountains and takes 1,480 steps to reach.

How many people died in Dracula’s Castle?

Don’t worry, it’s not as grim as it sounds! There’s no real record of anyone dying inside Bran Castle itself. The Dracula legend is just that – a legend. The real-life inspiration, Vlad the Impaler, was known for his ruthless battles, but those took place elsewhere. Today, the castle’s filled with history, not hauntings.

How much does it cost to go to Dracula’s Castle?

A visit to Bran Castle won’t break the budget. Tickets are around €15–20 for adults and cheaper for kids and students. You can tour the castle, wander through secret staircases, and even try a cup of mulled wine at the base—it’s a fun, affordable stop for the whole family.

Where to stay when visiting Bran Castle

If you’re planning a visit to Bran Castle, I highly recommend staying nearby so you can soak up all that Transylvanian charm. We stayed in a cozy Airbnb, surrounded by rolling hills and misty pine trees. It felt like stepping straight into a fairytale.

Arriving in Bran, Transylvania: Snow, Scenery, and Adventure

It was snowing in Romania when we finally arrived on Castle Bran’s spooky doorsteps after 10 months of touring Europe. Although Brasov had welcomed us with a warm winter sun, the next day, snow blanketed the town. After digging the car out, we braved the unfamiliar driving conditions (we’re from Australia!) and headed straight to Bran Castle in Transylvania.

Where is Bran Castle Transylvania?

Bran Castle location sits at the entrance to the Rucăr–Bran passage, connecting Brasov to Câmpulung, shadowed by the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Mountains. Bran is less than 30 km from Brasov. Driving along National Route 73, the castle’s iconic silhouette soon comes into view.

Transylvania is a historical region located in central and northwestern Romania, bordered by the Carpathian and Apuseni Mountains. It is now part of Romania, and while it is known for its rich history, medieval towns, and natural beauty, it is also famous in popular culture as the home of the Dracula legend.

We stayed in Brașov during our trip and absolutely fell in love with the city. Spending Christmas there was like stepping into a real-life winter wonderland – twinkling lights, festive markets, and the snow-dusted rooftops of the old town made it feel magical. Wandering through the charming cobblestone streets, sipping hot chocolate, and soaking up the holiday atmosphere with my two kids created memories we’ll treasure forever. Brașov is the perfect base for exploring Transylvania, combining history, charm, and festive cheer all in one.

Parking and Exploring Bran Village

Parking was straightforward – opposite Bran castle, a local attendant happily took our cash. We hiked a gentle incline past local markets, horror-themed restaurants, and tempting food stalls, all on the way to our main goal: Castle Dracula itself.

Visiting Bran Castle: Tickets, Photography, and Fees

We purchased tickets at the door. In 2025, adult tickets are 30 Lei (€6.60) and kids pay 7 Lei (€1.50). If you plan to take photos or film, there’s a photography agreement and a small filming fee of 20 Lei (€4.50).

Inside Bran Castle: History, Legends, and Architecture

From the outside, Bran Castle is breathtaking. Inside, it’s smaller than castles in Wales, Ireland, or Neuschwanstein in Germany, and less intimidating than Hollywood might have you believe. But history lovers will find plenty to explore.

The fortress is Transylvania’s most popular tourist attraction and is famously called “Dracula’s Castle.” Bram Stoker never visited, and Vlad the Impaler only stayed one night. Despite the lack of vampires, Bran castle now houses a museum featuring art and furniture collected by Queen Marie.

Visiting Bran Castle with Kids

A Bran Castle tour with kids is surprisingly fun. Towers, hidden staircases, and old – world charm keep children engaged while adults enjoy the history. Pair a castle visit with a walk around Bran village, local food markets, and scenic Transylvania views for one of the top things to do in Brasov with kids.

Final Thoughts: A Gothic Adventure in Transylvania

Words can only capture so much – Bran Castle truly needs to be experienced in person. I hope you enjoyed our wander through every tower, staircase, and hidden corner of this Gothic masterpiece, uncovering the history, legends, and charm that make Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania unforgettable.

While visiting Bran Castle Transylvania make sure you check out the Libearty Bear Sanctuary as well, it’s soul wrenching.

And hey, if you ever stumble across $80 million and need someone to housesit… I know just the family!
