15 Things to do in Amsterdam with Kids – My Ultimate Family Travel Guide

Amsterdam may have its reputation for sex and drugs, but we were there for a completely different reason. Outside of the Netherlands being my mother’s country of origin, I was genuinely excited to experience Amsterdam as a family destination, not just a stop for backpackers or party crowds.

And we did it.

My kids, Mia and Caius, and I just soaked in every canal, cobblestone street, and quirky moment along the way.

If you’re planning a family holiday in Amsterdam with kids, this is my full guide packed with fun, learning, food, culture, day trips, and everything you actually need to know.

15 Fun Things To Do In Amsterdam

1. Houseboat Stay in Amsterdam – Unique Family Accommodation

One of the best places we stayed in Amsterdam was on a houseboat.

It instantly changed the rhythm of the trip. Everything slowed down in the best way. The kids loved being right on the water, watching boats glide past our window like it was everyday life.

It felt like stepping straight into the Dutch lifestyle.

If a houseboat is not your thing, there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in Amsterdam across Jordaan and near Centraal Station.

2. NEMO Science Museum Amsterdam – Hands-On Learning

NEMO Science Museum is one of the most interactive attractions in the city.

We arrived by canal boat, which dropped us right at the entrance, but it is also an easy walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station.

It is five floors of experiments, science exhibits, and hands-on discovery.

Mia and Caius loved the science lab where we wore lab coats, used clipboards, and completed experiments like separating colours using water. Proper little scientists in action.

The rooftop is a highlight with water play and panoramic views over Amsterdam.

Curiously there was a 12 to 18-year-old section, which was filled with dolls in sexual positions and puppet tongues to demonstrate French kissing. Not entirely appropriate in my opinion for any 12-year-old, and was certainly causing many of the adults to blush.

Entry is generally around €17–€20 per adult, depending on the season. Check your ticket prices below.

3. Kinderkookkafé Amsterdam – Kids Cook Their Own Meals

Kinderkookkafé is one of the most unique experiences we have ever had.

Mia and Caius made their own meals from scratch, choosing ingredients from picture boards and building their own pizzas.

They wore chef hats, cooked their creations, then ran off to play while everything baked.

Then came the best part. Eating what they had made themselves.

The space is a little rustic, but the experience is unforgettable.

4. Ontdekhoek Amsterdam – Interactive Kids Discovery Centre

Ontdekhoek is slightly outside central Amsterdam but easy to reach by tram.

It feels like a hands-on discovery centre where kids choose real-life activities. Much like a simple KidZania.

We made potato chips from scratch, peeled potatoes, used a fryer, built paper cones, made music patterns, wrote with quills, and built small boats.

Yes, it involves real tools and hot oil, so I stayed close the entire time, but the kids absolutely loved the responsibility. Despite (and possibly because of) the knife and hot oil, the kids absolutely loved it, and the chips were pretty tasty.

They did not want to leave.

Note: Ontdekhoek has since permanently closed, but I am leaving it in this guide because it was such a memorable family experience and a great example of the kind of interactive activities Amsterdam used to offer for kids.

5. Anne Frank House Amsterdam – Important Family Experience

Anne Frank House is one of the most powerful places in Amsterdam.

Anne Frank lived in hiding for more than two years during World War II. Her diary later became one of the most important books in modern history.

Walking through the secret annex is deeply emotional and thought-provoking.

This is not a light attraction, but I felt it was an important experience to share with Mia and Caius in an age-appropriate way.

Tickets are around €16–€20 and must be booked online in advance. There is a number of Anne Frank tours that can be done in Amsterdam also, check them out below.

6. Pannenkoekenboot – Pancake Boat Amsterdam Experience

We actually missed the Amsterdam pancake boat by five minutes.

So learn from me. Do not be late.

We did a similar experience in Rotterdam instead, and it was brilliant. All-you-can-eat pancakes while cruising, plus a kids’ play area onboard.

It is fun, chaotic, and very family-friendly. Check out discounted tickets below.

7. Madame Tussauds Amsterdam – Interactive Family Fun

Madame Tussauds Amterdam ended up being way more fun than expected.

It is not just wax figures. It is interactive zones, challenges, costumes, and photo experiences.

Mia and Caius tried football skills, dressed up, posed with celebrities, and explored themed rooms.

The Dam Square views from the top are a bonus.

Entry is usually around €20–€25, depending on the season.

Check out discounted ticket prices below.

8. Canal Tour Amsterdam – Hop-On Hop-Off Canal Bus

Most of Amsterdam is best seen from its canal system. It is honestly the city’s superpower.

The Canal Bus runs a hop-on, hop-off style service with 4 routes and 19 stops across the city, which makes it one of the easiest ways to explore Amsterdam with kids. And yes, you know how much we love a hop-on, hop-off moment.

It connects major museums, shopping areas, and key attractions, so you can use it as both transport and sightseeing in one go. For families, it is a brilliant way to break up walking, keep things flexible, and still see a huge amount of the city without tiring little legs out too quickly.

It is relaxed, scenic, and very practical for a family travel day.

There are a number of tours you can book on the canal, check out our favourites below.

9. Eating in Amsterdam with Kids – Dutch Food Guide

No trip is complete without eating your way through Amsterdam.

Stroopwafels, Dutch pancakes, fries with mayo, cheese tastings, and street snacks are everywhere.

It is one of the easiest cities for casual family dining. Find more on Dutch food in our Dutch Food Guide or take a food tour here.

10. Zaanse Schans Day Trip – Windmills and Dutch Culture

Zaanse Schans is one of the best day trips from Amsterdam with kids. This is where you go for your windmill experience or to try on clogs and to eat lots of delicious cheese.

From Centraal Station you can take the regional bus and be here in less than 40 minutes.

Windmills, green wooden houses, cheese tasting, clog making, and open-air village life.

Things to Do in Amsterdam with Kids - Zaanse

Zaanse Schans features green wooden houses, cute gardens, small hump-backed bridges, tradesmen workshops, historical windmills and even a goat or two. The whole village is aimed at pleasing the tourist from its kid-friendly game area where children can try stilts or hula hoping to the little stores offering samples of cheeses and chocolates.

We climbed a windmill for an unbeatable, stunning vista of the Dutch countryside, then hitting a clog shop to watch how they were made and perhaps buy some for your best friends (because heaven knows you’re not going to wear such uncomfortable shoes).

In the tourist centre you can also visit the Verkade museum, which demonstrates the long history of a biscuit and chocolate making factory… and you get to try some, yum!

Mia and Caius loved how interactive it was.

With so many day trips to choose from, you’ll definitely find something that works for you. We preferred the shorter 5.5 hour day trip over the longer ones. But check them out below.

5 Things We Didn’t Do, But Can’t Wait To Next Time

11. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam – Culture for Families

Rijksmuseum is one of the most important museums in the Netherlands.

Even if your kids are not museum lovers, the family trails help make it more engaging.

The building alone is worth the visit.

12. Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam

Van Gogh Museum is emotional, colourful, and surprisingly engaging if you pace it well with kids. Focused on storytelling rather than rushing through exhibits.

13. Vondelpark Amsterdam – Free Family Time

Vondelpark is the perfect reset space.

Playgrounds, open lawns, cycling paths, and space to breathe between busy sightseeing days.

14. Jordaan Walking Exploration – Hidden Canals

Walking through Jordaan is one of my favourite parts of Amsterdam.

Quiet canals, boutique shops, and peaceful streets make it feel like the real Amsterdam.

15. Albert Cuyp Market Amsterdam – Food and Local Energy

Albert Cuyp Market is a lively street market full of snacks, food stalls, and local atmosphere.

Perfect for casual wandering and tasting Dutch treats.

Rotterdam Day Trip

Rotterdam is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary if you have extra time in the Netherlands. Just a short train ride from Amsterdam, it feels completely different with its modern architecture, huge harbour, quirky cube houses, and more laid-back vibe. Mia and Caius loved the maritime feel of the city, especially the pancake boat experience and exploring the waterfront areas. It makes a great family-friendly day trip from Amsterdam if you want to see another side of Dutch culture beyond the canals and historic streets.

Amsterdam Public Transport with Kids Explained

Amsterdam is incredibly easy to get around.

  • Trams for central travel
  • Metro for longer distances
  • Ferries are free and fun
  • Canal boats double as sightseeing

You can use contactless payments or day passes. The I amsterdam City Card is worth considering if you are planning to pack in lots of attractions. It includes free or discounted entry to many museums and experiences, plus unlimited public transport on GVB trams, buses, and metros. It can be a great way to save money if you are doing multiple paid activities in a short stay, especially with kids.

We also walked a lot because the city is so compact.
