Whale Watching Tours in Juneau: A Family Adventure

If your kids are obsessed with whales, Juneau is the place to be. From April through October, humpback whales grace the waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage, and Juneau is one of the best spots to see them.

We embarked on the Alaska’s Whales, Glaciers & Rainforest Trails tour with Gastineau Guiding, a local company renowned for its small-group, fully guided whale watching tours and hiking experiences

Our day began with a pick-up from downtown Juneau. We joined a small group of fellow tourists and boarded a comfortable bus that took us to the Tongass National Forest. The drive was scenic, with lush greenery and towering trees setting the stage for the adventure ahead.

Upon arrival, we embarked on a tranquil walk through the shaded forest path. The earthy scent of the woods, the soft crunch of leaves underfoot, and the vibrant green hues of the forest were a delight to all the senses. The trail meandered through various stages of forest growth, offering a glimpse into the diverse ecosystem of the temperate rainforest. The hike culminated at the water’s edge, where the kids collected seashells and dipped their toes into the cool waters.

Before heading out to sea, our guide provided snack bags that included apples, granola bars, and a bottle of water-perfect for refueling after the hike. At the harbor, we boarded a custom safari vessel and set out into the open ocean in search of the mighty humpback whale.

The experienced guide pointed out landmarks, shared insights into the region’s history, and offered tips for spotting local wildlife. Soon, we spotted a whole island of sea lions basking on a rocky outcrop. Their playful antics and curious gazes added to the excitement.

As we ventured further, the captain skillfully navigated the waters to locate and identify the gentle giants of the sea. We were given permission to stand at the stern and bow to watch the whales up close. The boat windows were opened, allowing for unobstructed views and the refreshing sea breeze.

Our patience was rewarded when we observed a flock of seagulls floating above the ocean. With loud squawks, they dove into the churning waters in an attempt to catch the herring rising to the surface. Then, with a sudden retreat, they soared into the sky as a pod of humpback whales breached the surface, their mouths open wide to consume the fish. This rare phenomenon, known as bubble-net feeding, occurs when whales work together to capture large schools of fish. It was a beautiful and captivating display of nature’s ingenuity.

The tour was an unforgettable experience, offering a unique opportunity to witness the majestic humpback whales in their natural habitat. If you’re planning Juneau with kids, this tour is a must-do for wildlife enthusiasts of all ages.

Hooked on Salmon? Juneau’s Got You Covered

If your family’s idea of a good time involves fishing rods, sea breezes, and a splash of adventure, then Juneau is your ultimate playground. Whether you’re keen to watch salmon in action, try your hand at fishing, or feast on the freshest catch, this Alaskan capital has it all.

Watch Salmon in Action at the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery

Just a short 3-mile jaunt from downtown Juneau, the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery is a must-see for families. Operated by the Douglas Island Pink and Chum (DIPAC) nonprofit, the hatchery raises over 130 million chum, king, and coho salmon annually. Visitors can witness the fascinating life cycle of Pacific salmon, from eggs to adults, and even watch bald eagles swoop down to grab salmon in their talons.

The hatchery features a sky bridge offering a bird’s-eye view of hatchery operations, allowing visitors to observe millions of baby king and coho salmon growing in the rearing facility. Additionally, visitors can explore saltwater aquariums displaying over 150 species of marine life.

Try Your Hand at Shoreline Fishing with Chum Fun Charters

For a truly hands-on experience, join Chum Fun Charters for a 3.5-hour shoreline fishing adventure. Operating from June through September, these tours are perfect for families and beginners. The friendly guides provide all the gear you need, including rods, reels, tackle, and rain gear. They’ll even help you obtain an Alaska fishing license if you don’t have one.

The tour includes transportation from downtown Juneau to the fishing spots and a visit to the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery. While catching fish isn’t guaranteed, the experience of fishing from the shore in Alaska’s pristine waters is unforgettable

We moved from the pier to the shore and started up again with wins all round. Time passed so fast, the sun quickly fading and cold slowly starting to seep in, so we joyously returned all our salmon back to the water so they could live to fight another day, and headed home.

Feast on Fresh Salmon in Downtown Juneau

After a day of fishing or exploring the hatchery, treat your family to a meal at one of Juneau’s many seafood restaurants. Downtown Juneau offers a variety of dining options where you can savor fresh, locally caught salmon prepared in various styles. Whether you prefer grilled, smoked, or baked, there’s a dish to satisfy every palate.

Spotting Bears Around Juneau: A Wild Adventure

If your family is dreaming of a true Alaskan wildlife encounter, keep your eyes peeled for black bears during your Juneau adventures. Alaska is home to three types of bears – black, brown (grizzly), and polar – but around Juneau, it’s mostly black bears that pop up in the wild.

Bear sightings aren’t guaranteed, but areas near Mendenhall Glacier are known for occasional furry visitors. Picture this: hiking along a scenic trail, surrounded by towering glaciers and lush forest, when –surprise!- a black bear crosses your path. (Well, maybe “casually” is a stretch -they’re always alert!)

Kid-Friendly Tips for Safe Bear Viewing

  1. Keep Your Distance – Stay at least 100 yards (about the length of a football field) away from bears. Bring binoculars for a close-up without getting too close.

  2. Stay Calm and Quiet – Speak softly or remain silent. Sudden movements or loud noises can startle the bear.

  3. Teach Kids “Bear Etiquette” – Explain that bears are wild animals, not pets. No feeding, touching, or chasing!

  4. Stick to Trails – Stay on marked paths. Bears are more likely to be spotted near water sources, berry patches, and the edges of forests, but it’s safer to remain on designated trails.

  5. Use Guides for Added Safety – Consider a guided wildlife tour. Local guides know where to find bears safely and can teach the whole family about Alaskan wildlife.

Even a quick glimpse of a black bear in the wild is an unforgettable experience for kids and adults alike. Watching these majestic creatures from a safe distance brings the Alaskan wilderness to life – and gives your family stories to tell for years to come!

Puppy Love: Alaskan Huskies in Action

If your kids (and let’s be honest, you too!) can’t resist puppies, Juneau has an experience that will steal your hearts. Alaska’s official state sport is dog mushing, and while these incredible huskies spend their winters racing through snow-covered backcountry, summers are all about running and playing- and you get to join in!

We hopped into a van from downtown Juneau with Gold Rush Dog Tours and enjoyed a scenic drive up the mountain. Once at the homestead, we were greeted with a warm introduction to Alaska’s dog mushing history. The tour is charmingly set among small, cozy wooden buildings and even includes a hot cocoa and cookies stop-perfect for keeping little hands warm. We watched a short film about dog mushing, got hands-on with a real mushing cart, and had the chance to ask an experienced musher all our burning questions.

Then came the moment everyone was waiting for: meeting the huskies themselves. Tails wagging, paws ready, and howls echoing through the valley – these dogs were pure excitement and energy. (Our kids were nearly as excited!)

We bundled up and boarded the summer cart for a thrilling 20-minute ride through a valley framed by towering evergreens and cascading waterfalls. The air was filled with the fresh scent of the forest, the sound of running dogs, and that unmistakable feeling of freedom only Alaska can deliver. Along the way, the musher made stops to let the dogs drink and even roll in man-made puddles to cool off. It was clear these huskies were born to run.

Back at the homestead, we rewarded our cheerful pack and met a few more adult dogs – but the highlight of the day was yet to come: the puppies. The newest members of the Sheep Creek Crew were beyond adorable – cuddly, playful, and absolutely irresistible. Of course, mom kept a watchful eye, so we had to hand them back all too soon, but not before snapping countless photos and soaking up the puppy love.

This experience is an absolute must for Juneau things to do with kids. It’s fun, interactive, and unlike anything else you’ll find, offering a truly hands-on connection with Alaska’s iconic huskies. Perfect for kids, puppy-lovers, and anyone wanting a taste of authentic Alaskan adventure.

Don’t miss this experience while in Juneau! It was a family favourite. And such a different experience to our husky sled ride in Finland.

There’s an interactive section designed specifically for children, where they can touch, explore, and learn about Alaska’s incredible ecosystems. The museum’s collection also highlights Alaska Native culture, historic artifacts, and the story of life in this unique northern region. It’s an educational, engaging, and warm environment that balances learning with hands-on fun for all ages.
