Before I dive into our Xanadu Island Resort adventure, let’s talk options for families in San Pedro. The island has a mix of boutique hotels, beachfront resorts, and self-catering apartments. Expect family rooms to start around USD 200–350 per night, depending on season, with peak times like Christmas or spring break jumping higher. Many resorts offer pools, beach access, and breakfast options, but if you want that mix of privacy, space, and charm for the kids, Xanadu really stands out. Check prices for Xanadu here.
Xanadu Island Resort, Ambergris Caye – A Place to Stay Forever
Have you ever stayed somewhere and immediately wished you could move in permanently? That’s exactly how I felt about Xanadu Island Resort on Ambergris Caye. Palm-fringed beaches, a shaded pool, proper cabins rather than hotel rooms – it had every box ticked. Honestly, I didn’t even want to leave to explore the island because staying felt like paradise itself.
The Epic Journey to Our Tropical Escape
Getting to Xanadu was an adventure in itself. We left home at 8:30am, travelled nearly 5 hours by bus, hopped on a speed boat for almost 2 hours, then faced an hour of immigration and customs. By 6:30pm, the taxi delivered us to the resort, just in time for a Valentine’s Day-style sunset that made every travel hour worth it.
The dirt track leading through swaying palm trees felt lush and inviting. The little office greeted us warmly, helped with our bags, and before we knew it, tropical punch in hand, we were settling into our room.

Eco-Friendly Elegance at Xanadu Island Resort
Xanadu Island Resort is eco-friendly heaven. With 18 fully equipped condominium apartments, all in dome-shaped buildings, it’s fireproof, soundproof, hurricane-proof, and topped with thatched roofs. Wooden decks with swinging hammocks practically beg you to take a nap in the breeze.

Our first villa was a three-bedroom beachside gem. Circular, curvy, and completely unique, the upper-level staircase gave my little adventurers a tiny thrill (and maybe a tinge of fear). The villa had a lounge, a fully stocked kitchen, three bathrooms, and all the modern comforts like WiFi and cable.
Mia immediately claimed the hammock outside, and we often spotted her through the window, enjoying her own little cave-time sanctuary.

Beachside Bliss
By night two, we moved to a two-bedroom apartment right on the beach. The ocean was less than ten steps from our door, and the views were jaw-dropping. The circular rooms felt inviting and fun, the kids napped while I lounged in the sun with a hammock just steps from the waves. Absolute perfection.

Pool Days and Island Adventures
Our first three days at Xanadu were spent mostly on-site, only leaving for meals. There’s no restaurant or bar at the resort, but soda, water, and nearby restaurants are easy to access. Free bikes make island exploration a breeze, and both mornings we cycled with the kids to George’s Kitchen for breakfast.

The heated pool became our happy place. With a kids’ section and a deeper adult area, Mia and Caius made plenty of friends, while we enjoyed meeting other families and socializing.

If total relaxation isn’t your style, Xanadu has options: grab a free kayak and paddle to the reef, snorkel with fish and stingrays, walk the pier, hunt for coconuts on the beach, or book a tour to Mayan ruins through the resort’s desk.

Saying Goodbye is Hard
On our last day, we left our luggage with the front desk and spent every last moment soaking up the pool and sunshine. Reality was hard to face – we’d spent three glorious days in pure family bliss, and leaving felt like a mini heartbreak.
Xanadu Island Resort truly lives up to its name – an idyllic, beautiful slice of paradise on Ambergris Caye. I can’t recommend it enough. For bookings and details, check out their website or their Facebook page, and start planning your own unforgettable tropical escape.
