Where To Stay In Rotterdam with Kids

For a unique family stay, we chose the SS Rotterdam, a historic cruise ship docked at Katendrechtse Hoofd. Staying on the ship was an adventure in itself for Mia and Caius, who loved exploring the Captain’s quarters, steering at the helm, and wandering through the theatre and indoor pools.

The rooms are spacious and family-friendly, and being right on the water adds an extra sense of adventure. Overnight stays start from €120 per room, and the guided tours around the ship make it an unforgettable experience for both kids and adults. It’s a perfect base for families wanting to explore the city while enjoying a truly memorable stay.

1) Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp) – A Top Family Attraction in Rotterdam

Rotterdam with kids wouldn’t be the same without a visit to Rotterdam Zoo. Blijdorp is widely recognized as one of Europe’s most beautiful zoos, with plenty of unique habitats for giraffes, gorillas, polar bears, and more.

Mia and Caius loved the Amazonica butterfly garden, running through the colorful butterflies, and were fascinated by the huge Oceanium. Tickets are approximately €26 for adults and €21 for children ages 3–12, with family passes available.

2) Rotterdam Playgrounds – Perfect Spots for Kids to Burn Energy

Rotterdam is dotted with playgrounds, making it easy to let kids burn off energy. Right outside our hotel, Mia and Caius ran straight for a large playground with climbing frames, flying foxes, and slides. A short walk away, an old boat converted into a climbing playground kept them entertained for ages, and I enjoyed watching them explore and play.

3) Pannenkoekenboot Rotterdam – Fun Pancake Cruise for Families

Sailing Rotterdam’s waterways while eating endless pancakes? Yes, please! Mia and Caius were thrilled by the lower deck ball pit while I indulged in sweet and savory pancakes.

My tip: cut the pancakes in half and try different toppings. Prices are around €25 for adults and €18 for children.

4) SS Rotterdam – Historic Cruise Ship Adventure for Kids

Docked at Katendrechtse Hoofd, the SS Rotterdam is full of history and adventure. Mia and Caius loved steering the ship at the helm and exploring the Captain’s quarters. Highlights for us included the theatre, indoor pools, and the behind-the-scenes guided tour. Overnight stays start from €120 per room, and it’s a unique way to make family memories.

5) Splashtours Rotterdam – Exciting Amphibious Bus Tour for Families

Mia and Caius were mesmerized by the amphibious bus tour that drove through the city before splashing dramatically into the Maas River. The kids got little presents and bottles of water, and we all laughed as the bus hit the water. I would have preferred a live commentary, but seeing the kids’ faces light up was unforgettable. Tickets are about €25 for adults and €18 for kids.

6) Maritime Museum Rotterdam – Interactive Fun for Kids and Adults

I wasn’t expecting the Maritime Museum to be so kid-friendly, but Mia and Caius were instantly drawn to the interactive top floor. They had fun with slides, rigging exercises, and mini crane operations, while I enjoyed the history exhibits on early 20th-century cruises.

Admission is €17.50 for adults and €10 for children ages 4–12.

7) Plaswijck Park – Mega Playground and Waterpark Adventure in Rotterdam

Plaswijckpark Theme Park was by far their favorite. It’s part playground, part fair, part zoo, and part waterpark. Mia and Caius rode bikes around the mini traffic circuit, rolled down giant hills, splashed in boats, and explored indoor play areas while I relaxed on comfy beanbags. The kids’ independence and creativity shone here, and it was pure, uncommercialized fun.

Tickets cost €13 for adults and €11 for children.

We stayed three nights in Rotterdam and barely scratched the surface. Consider a visit to the Natural History Museum Rotterdam or Miniworld Rotterdam. We also wish we had time to use the Rotterdam City Card during our Rotterdam with children.

Getting around can be a little tricky, but the city is filled with family-friendly attractions that make it worth the effort. I’d love to return, perhaps with a car or bikes, to explore more and spend another day at Plaswijck Park. Rotterdam is a surprisingly wonderful city for families, and sharing these adventures with Mia and Caius made it truly unforgettable.
