There’s nothing better than having a trip on the horizon. You’ve got your flights booked, maybe a cute hotel lined up, and you’re already picturing that first cocktail or coffee the second you land.
But before you grab your bag and bolt for the airport, there are a few things you need to sort. Not the boring stuff your mum nags you about. Just the things that will genuinely make your holiday smoother and way less stressful.
Here’s what you should get done before takeoff.
Get your travel insurance sorted
It’s not exciting. No one wants to think about things going wrong while they’re trying to get excited about a holiday. But if your flight gets cancelled, your bag goes walkies, or you end up needing medical help, you’ll be glad you didn’t skip this step. Travel insurance is one of those things you hope you won’t need but really regret skipping when something goes sideways.
A good option to check out is Generali because they’ve got different plans depending on where you’re going and how long you’ll be away. It’s quick to set up and can save you a ton of money and stress if anything goes wrong. Just get it done and tick it off the list.
Double check your passport and any travel docs
It sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many people don’t realise their passport’s expired until the day before the flight. Do yourself a favour and check the expiry date now. Some countries won’t let you in if it expires in the next few months. While you’re at it, make sure your boarding passes, hotel info, and any tickets are saved somewhere you can get to without needing Wi-Fi. Screenshots or a quick printout can save you a panic at the airport or train station.
Make a packing list and stick to it
It’s very easy to overpack. Suddenly you think you need ten outfits for a three-day trip. You don’t. Write a list of what you actually need and stick to it. Think about your chargers, plugs, medication, skincare, and the basics you always forget. Start the list a few days before you pack so you can add to it as you go. You’ll save space, avoid last-minute shopping, and won’t end up dragging around a suitcase full of stuff you never even wear.
Tidy your house before you go
You might think you won’t care, but coming back to a messy flat after a long journey is awful. Do a quick clean, take the bins out, empty the fridge, and make your bed. It’s the last thing you want to do before a holiday, but future you will genuinely thank you when you walk back into a fresh-smelling, calm space.
Let your bank know you’re travelling
Banks can be twitchy when they see charges from a different country, and the last thing you want is your card getting blocked when you’re trying to pay for dinner. Let your bank know you’re heading abroad. It only takes a minute and most apps make it easy. While you’re at it, check your card fees for overseas spending and think about taking a spare card just in case.
Now you’re actually ready to go. No chaos, no panic, just a bit of prep that’ll make your trip way easier. Have the best time.
