2 weeks in Iceland: The ultimate road trip!

Not many holidays can compare to a road trip in Iceland… From breathtaking glacial lagoons to geothermal wonders that will make your jaw drop, it’s no surprise that this incredible destination is a bucket-list item for so many. So, to help you make the most of it, here is an Iceland 2 weeks itinerary!

Renting your vehicle

Before we get into the exciting explorations, you will need to rent a vehicle for your 2 weeks in Iceland. There are various different options available, such as 4×4 vehicles, however, the most popular choice is a motorhome rental in Iceland.

Having a home on wheels means you do not have to worry about pre-booking expensive hotels for each night, leaving a lot more room for spontaneity in your road trip. These vehicles are also fully equipped with a kitchen, a toilet, and everything else you need for a comfortable journey.

Make sure to book your motorhome in advance, to have it ready for you on the day of arrival!

Iceland itinerary – 14 days

14 days in Iceland gives you ample time to explore this beautiful country and see many of its infamous attractions! Here is an example of a day-to-day itinerary you could follow:

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavík

Your journey will begin with arrival in the capital and the largest city of Iceland, Reykjavík. After picking up your rental motorhome, use this opportunity to do some sightseeing in this vibrant city.

You may visit the unique Hallgrimskirkja Church, learn all about the local history at the National Museum of Iceland, or simply take a stroll around and admire the colourful homes.

Day 2: Golden Circle

Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most iconic routes, located close to the capital. It’s the perfect start to your trip, visiting the powerful two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, the marvellous Geysir geothermal area, with its erupting geysers, and the Þingvellir National Park, where two tectonic plates meet, creating magical natural wonders.

After a jam-packed day, Hveragerði or Selfoss offer beautiful spots to settle down for the night.

Day 3: South Coast to Vik

On your third day, drive along the scenic South Coast, stopping by at some of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. The dramatic Seljalandsfoss offers the unique experience of walking behind the flowing water, while the picturesque Skógafoss is famous for reflecting rainbows off the water.

As you get closer to Vik, make sure to also visit the black sand beach at Reynisfjara, known for its powerful waves and basalt columns.

Spend the night in the charming seaside village of Vik, where you can also grab a delicious meal in one of the cosy local restaurants.

Days 5: Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón

Continue east to Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. Often referred to as the hiker’s paradise, Skaftafell is home to stunning hiking trails, one of which leads to the enigmatic Svartifoss. This waterfall is like no other, set amongst black basalt columns.

Moreover, the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a must-visit, with huge icebergs floating gracefully in the blue waters. Don’t miss the nearby Diamond Beach, either, featuring chunks of ice scattered all across the black sands.

Day 6: East Fjords

Continue onwards, driving through the tranquil region East Fjords. The winding roads will take you past charming fishing villages, like Djúpivogur, as well as towering mountains and scenic viewpoints.

Finish your day in Seyðisfjörður, a lovely town with its rainbow street, iconic blue church, and magnificent fjord views.

Day 7: Dettifoss and Lake Mývatn

On day seven, continue north, reaching Europe’s second most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss. After this jaw-dropping sight, keep driving towards Lake Mývatn, famous for its volcanic activities, lava fields, bubbling mud pools, and geothermal fields.

As you’re now hitting the half-way point, take the afternoon off to relax and take everything in. The Mývatn Nature Baths are the perfect spot to do this!

Day 8: Húsavík Whale Watching

From there, make your way to Húsavík, a city renowned for its many whale watching opportunities. Home to a variety of these incredible creatures, including minke whales, humpback whales, and even blue whales, Húsavík hosts regular whale watching tours where you can encounter one up close!

Day 9: Akureyri and Troll Peninsula

Start your day by visiting Akureyri – Iceland’s second-largest city, often named the “Capital of the North”. The city has many attractions on offer, including the Lutheran church of Akureyri and the quaint botanical gardens.

Next, head towards the Troll Peninsula, a rugged and untamed natural region, characterised by enormous mountains and serene fjords. In the winter, the area has lots of skiing opportunities, while the summer months are ideal for hiking.

Days 10 and 11: Westfjords

On days ten and eleven, venture into the remote Westfjords, scattered of magical spots. This region will offer a glimpse into the more traditional and isolated side of Iceland.

Visit Hólmavík, a small fishing village by the Steingrímsfjördur fjord. The town is known for its Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft.

The largest town in the region is Ísafjörður, surrounded by dramatic fjord landscapes and filled with quirky wooden houses with tin roofs. The Westfjords Heritage Museum is a fascinating visit here.
